皆さんは、沖縄北部に位置する自然のままのジャングル4000ヘクタールの日本政府への返還が、単に1972年の復帰以来最大の土地の返還だというだけではないことをご存知でしたか？実際、これは今までに沖縄に返還された土地全てを合わせたのとほぼ同じ大きさであり、これにより日本政府へ返還される土地のサイズは2倍になります。
北部訓練場(NTA)は、米海兵隊と自衛隊がジャングル訓練を実施する沖縄北部のジャングル訓練場です。しかしながら、日本政府によるいくつかのヘリパッド建設の完了後、NTAのほぼ半分はもはや訓練のために必要とされません。日米相互協力および安全保障条約の下では、日本の防衛のために米国によってこれ以上必要とされない土地は日本へ返還されることとなります。
これらの4000ヘクタールは、沖縄における米国専用施設全体の20％近くに達します。

USFJ Fact of the Week: Northern Training Area
Did you know that the planned return of 4,000 hectares of pristine jungle in northern Okinawa to the Government of Japan isn't just the largest return of land since the 1972 reversion? In fact, it's almost as large as every other Okinawa land return combined, and will nearly double the amount of land that has been returned to the Government of Japan over the past 40 years.
The Northern Training Area (NTA) is a jungle training location in northern Okinawa where U.S. Marines and Japanese Self-Defense Forces conduct jungle training. However, following the completion of several helipads by the Government of Japan, nearly half of the NTA will no longer be needed for training. Under the terms of the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security, land that is no longer needed by the U.S. for the defense of Japan will be returned to Japan.
These 4,000 hectares amount to nearly 20% of the entire U.S. exclusive-use area on Okinawa.
